Doryanthes

Two species of extremely striking large evergreen perennials from Australia. They look rather like large green flax plants with long sword shaped leaves up to 3m in lengh. The scarlet red flowers produced in spring and summer, are on a spike up to 5m tall. Doryanthes prefer full sun or partial shade, protection from hard frosts and a well drained humus rich soil. They grow successfully in sandy soil on the coast. For optimum growth water well during the summer.
