Wairere Nursery Ltd is a family run, Nursery which specialises in outdoor grown succulents. We've set up this site as a tool for our customers, trade clients, & landscapers, providing an online source of knowledge, photographs, and information of the plants we grow & sell. We've found that succulents are suitable for growing in a wide range of conditions (many more than we initially thought). There are so many microclimates within New Zealand, that we've had to provide a general guide only.
Wairere Nursery, Auckland | Aeonium

A genus of over 40 species found mainly in the Canary Islands, the West coast of North Africa and Ethiopia and the Atlantic Islands of the Azores, Cape Verde and Madeira. 31 species are endemic to the Canary Islan...ds. Aeoniums are also sometimes referred to as Canary Island Sempervivums (usually only in older documents). In 1753 the great botanist Linneans visited the Canary Islands and named A. arboreum, although he called it Sempervivum arboreum. Since then the various species have been described. The aeoniums are succulent shrubs with branching woody stems, often producing aerial roots. There are also some small stemless species which form flat ground hugging rosettes at the end of the stems. The flowers can be red/pink/yellow/cream depending on the species and are borne on large pyramid shaped racemes. After flowering each stem dies and should be cut out. Some are monocarpic and die after flowering.

Wairere Nursery, Auckland | Agave

The name Agave means noble. Native to the Americas occurring from Utah in the north through Mexico and the West Indies to Central America. Agaves occur in widely differing habitats, from mountains at heights of 2,700m to coastal sand-dunes. Some are susceptible to frost damage and others such as Agave huachuensis survive severe frosts and may be covered with snow in winter. Agaves from the West Indies are frost tender. Usually the life span of an agave is eight to twenty-five years. They are generally monocarpic, though often form offsets around the base, or plantlets on the inflorescence, and so continue though the main plant dies. Agaves tend to prefer full sun and need good drainage. Some such as Agave attenuata are happy in partial shade . Although agaves come from generally arid areas, we have found growing them outdoors in Auckland, that given well drained soil they tolerate our wet winter conditions well. We have grown them successfully on clay banks.

Wairere Nursery, Auckland | Aloe

Aloes are native to southern and eastern Africa. They range in size and form, from small groundcovers such as Aloe aristata, 'grass aloes' such as Aloe thompsoniae, low growing aloes such as Aloe maculata, single trunked aloes such as Aloe thraskii to large tree aloes such as Aloe bainesii which may grow to 15m (H). In total about 380 species. Most of the aloes flower during winter. The flowers are tubular bell shapes on long spikes and range from cream and green to yellows and reds. Aloes are tolerant of a wide range of conditions, from full sun to shade, but all generally need good drainage. Most benefit from being watered in the summer especially Aloe plicatilis which can suffer from blackening of the tips if kept dry too long. Aloes make excellent pot and container plants needing little maintainence. Aloes hybridize readily in the wild and there are many popular hybrid forms in cultivation.

Wairere Nursery, Auckland | Crassula

There are over 300 species of Crassula, most native to South Africa although there are species in South America and Australia. They are very varied in form and habitat, some being very small and compact plants ideally adapted to hard arid conditions such as Crassula perfossa, to larger shrubby forms like Crassula arborescens which can reach 2m in height. Many of the crassulas are in cultivation and are generally easy to grow. They are mostly hardy/semi-hardy and like regular watering. They will rot if they get too wet. Watering should be reduced after flowering.

Wairere Nursery, Auckland | Cussonia

This species numbering about 20 is native to southern Africa. They are small to medium trees and can be grown in large containers. As cussonia mature they become multi-branched and have a dense mass of large compound leaves. The flowers are fairly insignificant being small and greenish and are followed by red to black juicy fruit. Cussonia spicata is the most common species in cultivation and is often found as an indoor plant when young, though it matures to 6m or so. Once established cussonia will cope with mild frost although they will tend to defoliate. They need good drainage and do not like being waterlogged. In a container they need regular feeding. In South Africa Cussonia paniculata have been known to grow in deep crevices in rocky outcrops with little food or water.

Wairere Nursery, Auckland | Dasylirion

These architectural plants are extremely drought tolerant. The dasylirions form a genus of 18 species, all from the desert areas of southern USA and Mexico, where they are known as Sotol or Bear Grass. Most form a short trunk topped by an almost spherical head of leaves. The leaves are very narrow about 1m long with very small teeth along the margins. The trunk of Dasylirion longissimum grows to a height of 4m. Old leaves are retained on the trunks leaving a grass skirt effect. In summer they produce a huge flower spike up to 4m high covered in creamy white flowers, similar to yucca.
